Virtual EM Inc. has been awarded a fundamental patent on Airborne Antennas by USPO. Patent stipulates selective biasing of fuselage, wings, stabilizers, tails and ailerons of fixed-wing aircraft in pairs to form dipoles and monopoles. Work was funded by U.S. Navy through an STTR project and antenna performance was confirmed through flight-tests. Continuation-in-parts has just been filed to cover rotary-wing aircraft and the technology is applicable to both linear and circular polarization communication links. Operating frequency varies over the HF/VHF/UHF band (3-3,000 MHz) and the instantaneous bandwidths of 15-30% is typical with near-perfect radiation efficiency.
